The polar vortex, huge snowfall totals, and tire-destroying potholes have made this winter one of the harshest in recent memory.
But, imagine the toll if you didn’t have a roof over your head or, even simpler, a place to call home.
For the homeless, this scenario is reality, and the conditions of living on the street and the weather combine to make life difficult.
Over the last few winters, Atlantic Fasteners’ MJ, our outside salesperson in Western MA, has been collecting coats, socks, and supplies from our employees and others for this very cause.
She became dedicated in 2008 after meeting John Badger, a housing specialist with Springfield’s HAP Housing where he focuses on bringing people off the streets and into shelters and housing on their own accord.
“For some reason I gravitate to these people,” John said. “I have a knack for finding them.” The donations John receives is used as a token of gratitude for the privilege of developing a trusting relationship.
MJ said, “When I heard his story about what he does, I knew I wanted to help. It definitely pulled at my heart strings, especially since many of the homeless include veterans who have helped defend our country.”
Badger says what he needs most at this time is a location to store donated items.
And his team is always looking for donations and supplies.
